Why protecting nature is important.
Over the years, the quest for the “perfect lawn” has affected the natural order. The perfect yard is often a collection of toxic chemicals that collect in the soil eventually ending up in ground water. Please postpone, limit, reduce, or better yet eliminate the use of chemical pesticides and herbicides that will kill food sources for the insects, affect the birds by ingestion of contaminated insects, and kill the bees from contaminated pollen. Please limit disruption of grass and leaf piles until late spring to allow the dormant bodies to awaken. If you can, plant milk weed for the butterflies and caterpillars, and flowers to attract pollinators.
Natural weed killers are safe and effective.
There are many effective natural herbicides/weed killers, insect repellents, pesticides, and cleaning agents that can be made at home or purchased on-line/local retailers, and free on-line recipes that work! For example, a natural weed killer made from vinegar, water, and dish soap works like a charm. I use it all the time.
The beauty of nature surrounds us from the birds in the air to the budding trees and flowers, awakening insects, and animals. All have purpose and need our help to survive. The perfect lawn created with chemical herbicides and pesticides is harmful for all.
Here’s a wooly bear caterpillar I found in the grass last fall.
