Gluten and Chemical Free OTC Remedy

Many medications and OTC products will contain gluten.

Finding gluten-free over the counter products isn’t always easy, and many medications and OTC’s contain gluten and other harmful ingredients.

Syrup, tablets, and capsules often contain inactive ingredients, fillers, binders, and chemical dyes containing gluten.

In addition to artificial flavors and dyes, parabens, preservatives, PEG (propylene glycol), disodium EDTA, and sorbitol are ingredients commonly used by manufacturers.

The gluten-free or sensitive might feel worse after taking a product to feel better.

Here are some of my favorite gluten and chemical free, non-GMO, USDA organic products from Genexa.

Genexa is a reputable company with a clean effective product line.

Genexa Inc. is a Los Angeles based B corporation committed to sustainable sourcing and renewable packaging.

For additional and more detailed product line information visit Genexa’s company website.

Their product line includes pain and allergy relief, homeopathic remedies, digestive and sleep aids, stress relievers, and cough/cold remedies. Products contain very few ingredients and are effective for both children and adults.

Here’s an example. Genexa’s liquid acetaminophen (the active ingredient in Tylenol) for children contains only organic Agave syrup, organic blueberry flavor, natural citrus extract, non-GMO flavor, purified water, and acetaminophen, all easily recognizable safe ingredients.

It’s nice and clean.

Genexa products can be found at Target, Rite Aid, Walmart, Vitacost, Amazon, and iHerb to name a few.

Selections vary with some local stores offering only a few products in house and a larger selection on-line.

On-line prices vary and may or may not be cheaper.

Genexa Kids’ Allergy product details.

I use this children’s product. It’s effective, and I rest easy knowing it’s gluten-free.

This product contains 12.5 milligrams of diphenhydramine (the active ingredient in Benadryl) per 5 milliliters. What impressed me most is that it only contains 4 ingredients (organic Agave syrup, citrus extract, purified water, and the active ingredient diphenhydramine HCL).

It’s refreshing to see a short and healthy ingredient list on a label. I love the minimal ingredients and GF status.

Recommended doses for adults and children (12 years plus) are 10–20 milliliters (25–50 milligrams) per dose, and children aged 6 to under 12 may have 5–10 milliliters or 12.5–25 milligrams. It’s not recommended for children less than 2 years old.

It can be used every 4–6 hours with a maximum daily dose of 6 doses per 24 hour period.

With children aged 2 to 6 years old, it should be given only when directed by a physician.

This product has the same precautions as the brand name Benadryl such as possible sedation, increased sedative effect with alcohol ingestion, increased risk of injury if operating machinery/driving, and the potential for diphenhydramine associated excitability in some individuals.

Please read the additional warnings on the label regarding pregnancy, lactation, certain respiratory and prostate related conditions.

Here’s my take on Genexa’s Kids’ Allergy.

I found Genexa’s Kids’ Allergy effective for itchy eyes and nasal/sinus congestion. The syrup is quite thick from the Agave, but adding some water to the measuring cup makes it easier to swallow.

It has a pleasant, sweet taste and needs to be shaken very well before each use. It’s a great product, so is the acetaminophen.

If you’re GF, remember that it’s important to read labels and look for that GF mark as companies often change ingredients. If it isn’t marked GF, it most likely isn’t.
