How does peppermint oil soothe digestive concerns?
Peppermint oil has antispasmodic properties that relax the smooth muscle of the intestinal wall and has been shown to relieve the symptoms of IBS. What is IBS? Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a collection of symptoms including abdominal discomfort, bloating, and gas accompanied by alternating periods of constipation and/or diarrhea.
For those familiar, the symptoms can be frustrating and uncomfortable. Peppermint has also been safely used in clinical trials and proven to be an effective treatment for both indigestion and heartburn.
How to safely take products containing peppermint oil.
Peppermint oil is contained in an enteric coated softgel which once taken remains intact until it’s released in the intestine. This protects the stomach and esophagus from possible irritation. Unlike the tea, peppermint oil is concentrated, and the softgel must be taken with a full 8-ounce glass of water to avoid heartburn.
I once made the mistake of drinking less and experienced this. It was a lessen I didn’t need to repeat. Crushing or chewing the softgel is not advised and will cause irritation.
It is considered effective and safe when taken as directed and may be taken before or after a meal. I have used it before, after, and in between meals, finding it effective regardless of the time taken and always with a large glass of water.
As always, before adding a new supplement consult with your provider to avoid aggravating an existing condition or creating a possible interaction with a currently prescribed medication.
Peppermint can interact with some prescription and over the counter medications, herbal products, and vitamins. Ask your local pharmacist as well if this is a safe option for you.
Peppermint oil is contraindicated for pregnant and lactating women. If you have been diagnosed with GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), diseases of the gall bladder, hiatal hernia, or other medical conditions, taking peppermint oil may be contraindicated.
Peppermint oil, like many supplements, can be harmful if taken in high (toxic) doses. It’s advised to follow the suggested dose, and this product isn’t recommended for infants and young children.
What are the possible side effects of peppermint oil?
Most tolerate peppermint without issue. If you can’t, please pay attention to your body and act accordingly. Some possible side effects of peppermint oil include nausea, vomiting, heartburn, indigestion, rash, anal irritation (usually short lived), reduced heartrate, shakiness, and dizziness.
Rare allergic reactions can occur ranging from mild to severe. Those allergic to peppermint may also need to avoid thyme, rosemary, and other herbs as well as certain bath, beauty, and dental products, and some essential oils. Consult a medical professional for guidance on restrictions.

Nature’s Way Peppermint Soothe Review
I have used this product for many years and find it very effective. It helped lessen and eventually resolve my symptoms from an accidental gluten exposure.
Drinking a large glass of water with the softgel is very important to prevent irritation. The time I mistakenly didn’t drink enough, I experienced some belching and unpleasant burning.
When taken with an 8 ounce glass of water, it’s easy to swallow and I have no noticeable aftertaste or issues. For occasional bloating and gas, I find taking 1 softgel resolves the issue.
If you are struggling with digestive issues, you aren’t alone, and help is available. Please take the time to care for yourself and be evaluated. It’s recommended that a licensed medical provider evaluate any recurring or prolonged intestinal discomfort, or troublesome concerns.
Prior to meeting with a provider, it’s helpful to make a symptom list. Keeping a food diary to track individual or food combinations that cause symptoms may assist them in the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of your concern. It may be necessary to complete certain tests to determine the cause of your digestive issues.
