COVID-19 and the Kindness Connection

COVID wins if we lose our compassion for one another.

Kind words and gestures are needed now more than ever. If recent events have taught us anything, it’s the power of words. No one is unscathed whether vaccinated, unvaccinated, skeptical, or believing some, none, or all the frequently updated information presented by health experts.

Opinions presented by politicians, the news media, friends, and relatives are reminders of the virus’ impact on our lives. Heated discussions, arguments, and public unrest arise when conflicting points of view collide.

Well-being is affected by anger, anxiety, depression, and isolation related to differences in opinion, lifestyle changes, hardships, restrictions, and mandates.

This virus affects lives through loss of loved ones, personal experiences of illness, and lingering effects post recovery. Interpersonal relationships and lifestyles are disrupted.

Regardless of age or status, shopping, dining, exercising, working, and socializing have been affected worldwide. It causes financial hardship from loss of employment, work related absences, disability, and medical expenses.

We are so much more than our COVID experience and can soften the blow by directing patience and kindness toward ourselves and others. Kind words and gestures are powerful and change lives.

Whether smiling even through a mask, lending a hand, giving a compliment, or just listening, it only takes a moment to brighten someone’s day.

Compassion within also promotes health and well-being. Be patient with yourself, eat well, sleep enough, exercise, take precautions, meditate, listen to music, reread a favorite book, watch a movie, and gather safely or video chat with friends and family.

Each new day is full of possibilities. We can make a difference by preventing the virus from infecting our humanity.
